Why do entrepreneurs take the risk to start or expand a business?

This happens many times
-
because you feel like you can do more than what a job offers and hence want much higher responsibility
-
because you have found a calling to a cause which can be turned into a business and you have enough experience to understand the opportunity
-
because you now feel capable of being a self managed owner after having worked a long time in a job
-
because you have found the right people with whom you can start a business
-
because you feel it is more risky in the long term to stay in a job rather than start a business

Entrepreneurs are very smart people who have found multiple reasons to jump out of a career in a big company or they even start a business without experience as they think they can do what big companies do without as much resources.

We also find some entrepreneurs who take the challenge of entrepreneurship without many reasons to do so. For them they are risky by traits in personality and they have always been like so.

Whatever the reason might be, entrepreneurship is not easy and it is extremely hard to build a business of your own. I have personally seen many entrepreneurs lose hope and go back to even worse jobs than they previously had opportunities for.
